Toledo Shopping

The gold and black enamel work known as Damascene, made by local artisans, is famous throughout Spain. Many shops in Toledo also sell beautifully decorated plates, armour and high quality leather items.

Armour - Toledo is renowned throughout Europe for the quality of locally produced armour; from helmets, to swords, to full body armour and shields. If you fancy experiencing life as a conquistador you’ll find swords galore.  Please note that you can’t take many of these weapons with you on the flight home but most shops will ship for a reasonable price.

Ceramics - Talavera de la Reina (outside of Toledo) has a centuries old tradition of making glazed ceramics. Toledo is bursting with hand painted ceramics of varying degrees of quality (upmarket shops and boutiques are pricier, but generally carry higher quality pieces).

Damascene - Another famous handicraft of Toledo is damascene.  Its origins are the ancient Moorish art of interlacing gold on iron or steel, then firing it so that the underlying material oxidizes and becomes black leaving the gold in sharp relief. Almost every artisan shop in Toledo will carry some form of damascene work most commonly as small decorative plates and jewellery.

Leather - Spanish leather is famous all over the world. Toledo has many shops that sell leather and though not cheap you will appreciate the incredible quality and craftsmanship.
