Guadamur (Toledo)

Guadamar is situated 12 kilometres from Toledo and features an important 15th Century Palace-Fortress.  It has been extensively restored and furnished in an attempt to recreate the original period decoration.

Built on the site of an Arab castle it was used as lodgings by, among others, Felipe el Hermoso and Juana la Loca, Cardinal Cisneros and the emperor Carlos.

Also recommended is a visit to the hermitage of San Antón, nowadays the Museum of Popular Customs and Art of the Toledo Mountains; the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad and the parish church.

Situated at the foot of the Cerro Calderico, the Roman town of Consuegra is important in Toledo's stretch of La Mancha region.  It is the site of an impressive castle with an exceptional keep and several traditional La Mancha windmills.

Other places of interest include; City Hall, the Corredores, site of the Municipal Museum, the Tower of Tercia and the churches of San Juan and Santísimo Cristo de Veracruz, which has a museum of votive offerings.

The town’s fortress dates from the early years of the Re-conquest during the reign of Alfonso VIII.  It was loaned to a brotherhood which founded the Grand Priory of La Mancha. The City Hall building in Consuegra is in the Renaissance style and stands in Plaza de España, where there are also a number of houses with traditional wooden galleries.

Talavera de La Reina

Located in the fertile plains of the rivers Tagus and Alberche, Talavera de la Reina has been famous for its ceramics for centuries. It is also the largest town in the province of Toledo.

The town's most outstanding monuments include; the bridge of Santa Catalina, the Archiepiscopal Palace (baroque in style and from the 17th century and situated in Plaza del Pan, the nerve centre of life for Talavera's residents) and Cervantes college, with it’s Renaissance façade.

There are a great many religious buildings, outstanding among which are the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor, dating from the late 12th century and erected in the Gothic-Mudejar style.  It has a magnificent façade and tower, a splendid high reredos and a beautiful cloister.

The Mudejar church of Santiago with Gothic influences, the basilica of the Virgen del Prado, a museum of the famous glazed tiling of Talavera built between the 16th and 17th centuries and the Renaissance church of San Prudencio from the 16th century.
